Do you remember the comedy television series All in the Family? In one episode there was a hilarious scene in which a very pregnant Gloria Stivec (played by Sally Struthers) enlists the help of a neighbor in finding out the gender of her baby.  If memory serves me correctly, the neighbor tied her wedding ring on a string and held the string over Gloria's stomach.
